Acne affects millions of people worldwide. Beginning in the teenage years and sometimes lasting well into adulthood. When your acne is under control you have a sense of relief. Unfortunately, what is often left behind following the success of clearer skin may not leave you as confident as you had hoped, and acne scar removal and reduction is often required to repair the blemishes left from acne.
Acne causes skin inflammation that leads to the formation of scar tissue. Once this scar tissue forms, the skin develops divots, known as acne scarring. Other common reasons acne scars are left behind may be a result of skin-picking or from popping your pimples. Scars can form almost anywhere, but tend to be the most distressful on the face and back.
Acne scars appear as deep indents or raised areas on the skin’s surface. Acne scarring that occurs below the surface of the skin is a result of loss of the normal skin architecture and the accumulation of fibrous tissue, causing a pronounced depression, while acne scarring that occurs on the surface of the skin is a result of inflammation from past pimples.
Acne scar reduction using the Fractionated Laser can address both the upper and lower layers of skin. Targeting the deeper layers of the skin, the laser may help the appearance of the acne scar. Sometimes, Dr Josh may need to recommend other therapies in addition to the laser. This can be reviewed at the time of your consultation. Sometimes, a scar needs to be surgically corrected, and the laser can be used afterwards to maximize the cosmetic outcome. Other times, we may use a dermal filler alongside the laser to get maximal results. Dr Fink also uses the latest technology of fractionated radio frequency for this condition.
Patients may begin seeing improvement of acne scars in the first few days following treatment, but true improvement takes time. It may not work for everyone. Multiple sessions are required to fully repair damage caused by acne. Most patients require 3-5 laser acne scar reduction sessions. Following treatment, some redness may occur and skin may appear dryer than normal as dead skin cells peel off to make room for new, healthy cells to replenish the skin.
